From Sketch to Finished Painting: My Process as a Freelance Illustrator
Today I’m sharing my painting process to inspire artists to create. You don’t have to be an expert to paint. Painting is a great activity to soothe your mind. I started last year painting, and opportunities are opening for me. My first solo art show is happening Saturday, October 24 at 5 PM to 9 PM HOM Café & Wine. I’m excited and nervous about doing this venture. I’m working in acrylic gouache, and I want to share how one of my pieces were developed from the initials ideal to the finish piece.
The painting came from my childhood experience growing up in Brooklyn, particularly East Flatbush. Every day I used to pass the Wycoff House’s house after school. I thought it looked like a haunted house but later on I discovered that it’s an iconic landmark. Also, I found out that the house is a museum. This place is 500 centuries old. It’s the oldest New York house I was inspired to paint the white cough museum because I don’t think a lot of people know about this place nor do they cherish the landmark enough. The painting was to build brand awareness to my folks. I painted this painting based on my memories when I was a kid. I saw a lot of kids gardening and composting waste. I am amazed that this house has survived hurricanes and earthquakes. It’s such a strong property.
The first guest looked too still. What changed my mind from the first sketch is because it did not involve kids in my memory in my other memory and involve kids gardening and so that’s why I went with another sketch. The only challenge that I encountered was me controlling my pencil erasing. I had to overcome my perfectionist ways and just continue to paint.
I saw a lot of artists using acrylic gouache. I was curious to learn how it worked. I enjoyed the experience, creating art off the computer. I’m not confined to one area in my studio. The painting began to take shape when I painted the home and the children. I learned to be patient when I was painting, let the paint dry and come back another day.
I love how detailed the house looks. It looks like real bricks. It feels warm and cozy. My original ideal came to light. I believe it’s going to look fantastic in HOM Café & Wine. People are going to love feeling even more cozy in the café. They can do their work on their laptops.
I encourage beginners, intermediate and expert painters to experiment with acrylic gouache or any other medium. Don’t beat yourself up with your sketch. By doing an exhibit, it has helped me know how I like to work on painting and use my time wisely. My artwork will be a part of my October 24 exhibit in Brooklyn.
